Boat Song
Hey boy, don’t you get all wrapped up in the line
There is time to let it naturally unwind
There are fish below the boat that we will find
Hey boy, we’re cutting this old country like a knife
We are gaining speed before the sun will shine
We are bitten by the frost for just a time
We are certain to be hooked before the light
We didn’t come out here to go hungry tonight
This was said when I was first asked to come along
This was said when the city had done us wrong
And our bed was a bag and a rocky lawn
And I felt light in spite of the sun
Hey boy, I’ll let you throw the chum over the side
We are just a speck upon the ocean wide
You will feel alive once we begin the fight
Hey boy, it’s really not a question as to why
You must put your head down like a bull and ride
On through canyons and through rivers at their side
Until the night you would open up your eyes
We didn’t come out here to go hungry tonight

Distant Thought

Distant Thought
High above the embers, high above the ghost town left to rot
Sits a hillside of brilliance where a man can ponder what he’s got
Where a woman can lay like a painting from a master’s greatest work
Where the thorns that were stuck heal and become a distant thought
All cannot be somber when the clouds are bringing up the crops
Watching fawns dance and wander up the muddy creek until it stops
Both your eyes dry and clear as you wonder why you tried to untie the knot
All the darkness you stalked shatters and becomes a distant thought
Dust lay on everything you own
While you go unto the ground
Dig it up with all your lover’s bones
You won’t be going it alone
Paint me in silver, line my tomb in all the finest gold
Then light it with the embers burning at the fireplace at home
I’ll always miss the hillside, simple in it’s solitude and calm
All the fuss that we made mosses and becomes a distant thought

Don't Hold Back

Don’t Hold Back
Don’t hold back
Go’on let it rain
You’re not the only one
Feeling this pain
From the start
To the dusk of the day
You felt a loneliness
and you won’t let it fade
Just let the sun fall into
the crest of the waves
West of the waves
It all fades away
We all fade away
Don’t hold back
Go say what you’ll say
The more that you let it out
The less you’re afraid
In the end
When they’re digging your grave
Will you look back to see
that your fear was a waste?
Watch as the moon shines above
the silvery waves
West of the waves
It all fades away
We all fade away...

These Wounds

These Wounds
Walking down under the elm
Somewhere inside my teens
Teaming up at someone’s house
To drink and scrape our knees
Not knowing what lies ahead
Faking suicide notes as a way to make a friend
Searching out the highest point
and wandering through the brush
Put a blanket down, my love
There’s a place I’d like to touch
Behind some trees along the path
Nails scratching at my blemished back
These wounds keep on opening
I don’t mind
These wounds keep on opening
I don’t mind
These memories are so sweet
These memories are too sweet
Alleyways our sanctuary
Pools our second home
Summer kissed your shoulders
and the heat stayed on through fall
We’d rush home to your parent’s bed
and steal food so we could satiate our nervousness
The older guys in trucks were all
competing for your hand
It broke my heart to see you go
But there were more summers left
And though you chose a new path
I still have scars from the scratches on my back
These wounds...

Enough

Enough
The fire escape loomed above the alleyway
While Cinnamon found another place to sleep
The tenement had evicted her last week
And so she walked through the mess on Larkin Street
Is that enough to keep us living?
Is that enough to give us life?
Ain’t there a better way to die?
The copping hands felt like friends she’d like to meet
And so she reached for the feel of being free
Is that enough to keep us living?
Is that enough to give us life?
Ain’t there a better way to die...?

Greyhound Song
From Avenal I walked some miles
The dust, it caked into my hair
And I’d be walking for a while
The dirty dog would get me there
Salinas had my trapped for hours
Wandering upon her streets
A child had stopped to share a scowl
Under the smell of frying meat
I fell asleep near Monterey
In Watsonville I said a prayer
The night turned into breaking day
The dirty dog would get me there
In Santa Cruz another break
I yawned and walked the downtown streets
Past beggars hands and children’s skates
I found myself along the beach
I caught the bus before it left
And watched the world without a care
So close to San Francisco’s heart
The dirty dog would get me there
And when he finally parked the beast
I grabbed my bags and rolled along
And found a place where rent was cheap
On Sutter Street across from Gough
I lingered under neon lights
And quietly kept to myself
The days began to blend to night
And drinks came from an endless well
But joy inside that world would pass
I muttered how it wasn’t fair
Where would I find a place and last?
The dirty dog would get me there

Get Me Out of This Place

Get Me Out Of This Place
It took years to realize what I‘d become
Brainwashed, they said, but pitied by none
Was it a daughter there or maybe a son?
Released from the world before it’d begun
And when we danced the courtroom sat there stunned
at the song we sung
Family notified, but too scared to come
A family I left for a shot at the sun
Then he came a-beckoning: guitar and a gun
So we did what he said - refused to run
And when we danced the courtroom sat there stunned
at the song we sung
“Please get me out of this place
oh, get me out of this place
Paralyzed and pitiful for what can’t be erased
oh lo’ get me out of this place”
All your psychologists can’t clean this up
This mess has been made by Jesus’ son
Holy in camouflage - you know we are one
And though I’m locked down I’m going right up
And when we danced the rats just sat there stunned
and they’re not the only ones
“Please get me out of this place
oh, get me out of this place
Paralyzed and pitiful for what can’t be erased
oh lo’ get me out of this place”

One Last Breath

One Last Breath
It’s quiet in here except for the screams
And the hum of the TVs
Buried below these layers of sheets
Here I sit, silently
I sit as the dark, it falls over me
But I’m not blind, I still see
Taking away my last memory
Let me go out to sea
One last breath to breath
One last dance in this body
Hold my hand until I leave
Then set me free
I wake with the light as bright as can be
I’m so cold, I’m trembling
Back in the dark I felt warm and free
Not they cut, now I bleed
One new breath to breathe
My first dance in this body
Hold my hand it’s so tiny
It’s all I need

Not A Religious Man

Not A Religious Man
The summer rain fell heavy and people fled the scene
I ran to find some shelter underneath a tree
The lightning chased me down and brought me to my knees
Right then a holy symbol hovered over me
It took my hand, but I said
“I’m not a religious man
Just leave me be” but I knew
The gods had another plan
I traveled distances through human history
The myths and languages that built the first cities
Atop the mountainsides and in the valleys deep
Their faith had filled a void that still exists in me
It took my hand...

This Town of Mine

This Town of Mine
It’s time to say goodbye to this town and this life
To the people who let me sing these lines
And I don’t know why I can’t grow roots and bind
to this fertile and dusty town of mine
So I go and find another place and time
As I slowly hope my arms become the vines
I’ll carry it everyday
If this is a mistake it’ll eat me until I die
I’m carrying the weight
If this be a mistake, well I sure enjoyed the ride
And if I know the tides they will roll back inside
that deep and expanding oceanside
And I’ll rock side to side as the earth slowly slides
It might roll me back to this town of mine
I’ll carry it everyday...
Ooh...
